Poll to Select New Names for T.C. and Maury Opens

The first poll to canvas opinion on a selection of potential new names for T.C. Williams High School and Matthew Maury Elementary School opens to the public today.

Between now and Jan. 27, Alexandria City Public Schools are asking everyone to help us select finalists from the names that have been suggested by our students over the last month.

The community can make suggestions at this time.

The polls are here:

Matthew Maury Elementary School Poll: https://pollforall.com/y890wp

Suggestions to rename Alexandria’s high school include Nolan B. Dawkins High School, Herman Boon High School, King Street High School, Elizabeth Schuyler High School, Vola Lawson High School, and many others. Click on the link above to see the full list and vote.

Following this process, a second community-wide poll will open in February, with top-performing entries. After both polls have concluded, the community will have one more opportunity to voice their opinion at an Alexandria City School Board public hearing in March 2021. The Alexandria City School Board will make the ultimate decision that will be announced in April 2021. The new names will become the official names of the schools on July 1, 2021.

In November last year, the Board voted to change the names of both schools following a lengthy community engagement process known as The Identity Project.
