Speaker Series in Alexandria Focuses on Housing Options and Home Improvement for Older Adults

One of the most important decisions older adults will make is where they want to live. There are so many questions. Do you want to stay in your current home? Is it safe and secure? Are you curious about the benefits of living in a senior community? What about easy home improvements you can make that will quickly enhance your comfort and support your independence and safety?

These are just a few of the questions that will be answered in Senior Services of Alexandria, February Speakers Series devoted to Housing Options and Home Improvements. The program will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m – noon at the Beatley Central Library, 5005 Duke Street, in Alexandria. The program will feature four local senior housing experts.

Lindsay Hutter, chief strategy and marketing officer for Goodwin House, will open the program by providing information on what to consider if you are thinking of moving. She will describe the types of senior communities, the services they provide, and the range of costs. Another important thing to consider is what changes you can make so that your home is more comfortable and also more secure. Bob Eiffert, AARP Volunteer, will join the panel to review AARP’s Home-fit Guide which provides hundreds of simple, low-cost home improvement ideas. Every attendee will receive a free copy of the guide.

Whether you are moving or staying in your current home, now is the time for spring cleaning; and “decluttering” is the buzzword of the day. Just thinking about it can be overwhelming so you’ll be hearing from Lori James, owner of Atlas Services, who will be sharing tips on easy ways to get started.

Peter Crouch, associate broker with McEnearney Associates who specializes in “mature” moves, will discuss how to take the stress out of selling your home and what you should do to get it sold.

Tamara Jovoic, housing program manager for the City of Alexandria, will highlight the City’s goals for affordable housing for seniors and explain the Rental Accessibility and Modification Program and the Home Rehabilitation Loan Program and how they benefit seniors living at home.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served during registration which begins at 9:30 a.m. Please RSVP online at seniorservicesalex.org or by calling 703-836-4414, ext. 110.
