Demolition is underway as the City of Alexandria undertakes a major renovation of its historic City Hall and Market Square complex. The project is designed to modernize aging infrastructure, improve accessibility and security and preserve the landmark building for future generations.
The project includes restoration of the 1871 City Hall, upgrades to building systems, reconstruction of Market Square Plaza, replacement of the underground parking garage and creation of more accessible public gathering spaces.
Construction is expected to be completed in Fall 2028. Despite challenges including unexpected asbestos removal and structural repairs, city officials report the project remains on schedule. The total project cost is approximately $152 million.
The renovation is intended to enhance public services, support community events and preserve one of Alexandria's most important civic landmarks.
