Tackling Big Issues With Wry Comedy

Elden Street Players bring on "The Clean House."

Celebrating 25 years of "combining bold direction with extraordinary artistry" the Elden Street Players' new season will be one "with a strong focus on shows that intrigue and provoke thought for our audiences," said Angie Anderson, the artistic director. The season opener is "The Clean House" a Pulitzer Prize finalist by Sarah Ruhl. The show is a fusion of tart comedy and heartfelt drama, fantasy and daily life.

Dranesville Students Walk to School

Credit last year’s 5th grade class at Dranesville Elementary for getting the school involved in International Walk to School Day. “The 5th graders and their teachers were Internet searching for healthy activities as part of their science and health classes,” said Principal Kathryn Manoatl, “and they came across this global action campaign. It called for an international day of walking to school. Seemed like a perfect match. The focus was on school kids and what could be easier than walking?”

HOV Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North Closing

After morning rush hour on or about Friday, Oct. 12, the left-lane HOV (high occupancy vehicle) ramp from eastbound I-66 to northbound I-495 will close to traffic until the 495 Express Lanes open to traffic later this year and the ramp reopens as a new, dedicated 495 Express Lanes ramp. During the closure, carpools will use the ramp from the right lane of I-66 East to I-495 North (Capital Beltway’s Inner Loop).

New Downtown Herndon Mural Under Construction

Commissioned by Arts Council, Keith Naquin prepares mural on Ice House Café.

Downtown Herndon has been a bit more colorful in recent months, and artist Keith Naquin is a major reason why. Over the summer, the retired Herndon High School teacher turned the gray wall behind the NAPA Auto Parts building into a scenic, pastoral mural. Now he’s moved onto his second project, transforming the red brick wall of the Ice House Café.

Church Street Garage Discussed

Town and architect invite questions, comments.

The Town of Vienna and project architect Paul Layer conducted another round of citizen meetings on Sept. 27 to discuss the proposed Church Street mixed-use building, a small complex of parking garage/retail and condo apartments, developed as a private/public partnership. Approximately 25 concerned community members turned out for the mid-afternoon meeting, while a much smaller number participated in the evening meeting. The evening meeting, however, featured a greater interaction between speakers and fellow citizens.

These acronyms all relate to efforts designed to motivate girls to pursue science, technology, engineering and math—the four areas that are referred to collectively as STEM.

Salona Task Force Provides Update

Community discusses development possibilities.

The McLean Community Center was packed to the brim Thursday, Oct. 4 with community members waiting to hear the latest from the Salona Park Task Force, which has been charged with coming up with a master plan for a portion of the 51-acre historic Salona property. Located just east of downtown McLean on Dolley Madison Boulevard, 41 acres of the property was purchased from the DuVal family by the County for $16.5 million.
