Aldersgate Prepares Annual Fundraising Golf Outing
Event to benefit variety of charities.
Elizabeth King, 12, is setting her sights high for her first-ever golf tournament. “I’ve never done this before. My one hope is that I get a hole in one,” she said. Elizabeth and her family are among those who have signed up for the Aldersgate United Methodist Men’s 5th Annual Golf Outing. The event will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Joint Base Andrews’ West Course. “She’s been wanting to go out and play and this is a great way to do it,” said her father, Bob King. King has been playing in the tournament since it first began. When his son David, 15, became old enough, he joined his dad on the course. Now, Elizabeth will do the same. All three are planning to head out for a day together on the golf course. The family said the event is a great way to spend time together, playing a sport they enjoy in a noncompetitive environment.

Alexandria: City Workers Brighten Alexandria
People at Work
The 2x3 foot gray bucket slowly rises 17 feet toward the traffic light at Prince Street and Alfred in Old Town. Alvin Jefferson, a signal tech for the City of Alexandria, has strapped on his safety helmet, snapped on his red safety harness and hooked it onto the bucket. He is retrofitting Alexandria traffic signals with LED lights as part of the city's program to have all 250 signals completed by the end of the year. Matt Melkerson, division chief of traffic operations, says LED lights are more energy efficient and will save the city a lot of money on maintenance costs. Instead of changing bulbs every year and a half, the new LED bulbs are supposed to last at least five years and maybe longer. This frees the workers up to do other things. "In addition, it reduces the time when our workers are up in the air and exposed to traffic hazards."

Centreville: ‘She Started Shoving Me’
Kathy Smith assaulted while campaigning; woman arrested.
Add political campaigning to the list of things that can be hazardous to one’s health. At least that’s what Fairfax County Board of Supervisors hopeful Kathy Smith found out last Saturday. “I’m OK,” she said afterward. “But it was a scary situation.” So scary, in fact, that a local woman was arrested and charged with assaulting her and preventing her from making a 911 call.
