George Washington at Yorktown, Va., Oct. 19, 1781, ended serious fighting during the American Revolution and paved the way for the Treaty of Paris which recognized American independence. It was signed on Sept. 3, 1783 by representatives of King George III and John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, and David Hartley.
