Hundreds braved the chilly temperatures to welcome Santa and usher in the holiday season as they gathered for the annual lighting of the city’s Christmas tree Nov. 22 in Market Square.

One of the city’s signature events, this year’s tree lighting is the last to be held in Market Square as City Hall begins renovations in January that are expected to last through 2028.

“This is going to be our last celebration at City Hall and Market Square while we undergo renovations,” said Mayor Alyia Gaskins in remarks to the crowd.

Alexandria’s Town Crier, Ben Fiore-Walker, welcomed the crowd as Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on the King Street Trolley for the festivities. Gaskins was joined by members of City Council in welcoming Santa for the countdown to the lighting of the tree.

The crowd joined in the countdown, cheering as the towering 40-foot artificial tree, adorned with 38,000 lights, was illuminated in Market Square.

Following the lighting, the festivities continued with live performances by Steffenworx Brass, holiday carols, and photo opportunities with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The tree lighting is the first of several signature holiday events across the city. On Dec. 6, thousands will take to the city streets for the 54th annual Scottish Walk Parade, considered one of the top holiday events in the country.

Also on Dec. 6 is the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights on the Potomac River. The Del Ray Tree and Menorah Lighting will take place the following day, Dec. 7, in Pat Miller Neighborhood Square in Del Ray.
