Charities Win at Half Marathon
Ndereba, Johnson win 13.1-mile race.
Dreary skies couldn't dampen the spirits of more than 3,000 runners who took to the streets of Virginia and Maryland Oct. 7 in the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon, won by Kenyan Samuel Ndereba in 65 minutes and 15 seconds with American Kellyn Johnson leading the women in 1:13:24.
Serving Up Leadership
Armstrong to be honored as Business Leader of the Year.
He is a native Dubliner but for decades, chef Cathal Armstrong has made Alexandria his home, opening his signature Restaurant Eve in 2004 and creating The Eat Good Food Group with his wife Meschelle. On Nov. 13, Armstrong will be honored as the 2012 Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Business Leader of the Year at a reception to be held at Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Art Center.

The gang of regulars at Ramparts had a friendly wager going: How long would it take Butch Shunk to return after his vow to never again set foot in the popular Alexandria watering hole after its sudden shift to a no smoking policy on Easter Sunday? Some said three months but in the end it only took three days for the loyal customer to be back in his customary place at the end of the bar.

The efforts of 115 Mount Vernon Community School students who braved the torrential rains and cold temperatures last Oct. 29 paid off when MVCS was honored Jan. 19 as one of the top five schools that participated in the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon Healthy Kids Fun Run.
