Bishop Ireton senior Annie Mildrew won two Gold Key Awards in the Scholastic Art Competition for her two works “Sock Lock” and “Girl with the Acrylic Nails.” Senior Catherine Hiyama also won a Silver Key for her work “Eyes are the Windows.” The Scholastic Awards look for work that demonstrates originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal voice or vision. This is the first time a student from Bishop Ireton has won a Gold Key Award.
“Our art teacher, Mrs. [Vicky] Eichler, has pushed me since the beginning of my first art class at Bishop Ireton to follow my creative impulses,” said Annie. “I was surprised and filled with gratification to see that the two of my pieces won Gold Keys Awards. I’m so glad that I have had such an inspiring mentor like Mrs. Eichler in my life.”
Annie’s two Gold Key awards automatically qualified her for the National Scholastic Art Competition in New York City. She will go on to study Art & Design at Parsons School of Design in New York City this fall, and Catherine will pursue a degree in art this fall as well.
