Letter: Adopt A Block Works In Old Town

To the Editor:

My husband and I moved into beautiful Old Town a few years ago. We purchased a rather shabby and old historic home in need of lots of love and repair. We have been blessed with caring neighbors on our block and we met some wonderful neighbors around the corner, the Huettner's who have become Adopt A Block captains with us. When we moved in several blocks were just filthy — tree wells were filled with condoms, dental items, broken beer bottles and curbs piled up with trash and debris. We coordinated with the city Adopt A Block Director Mr. Holmes and his wonderful crew Darnell Moore and Mark Johnson. They provided us with lots of city trash bags, weed killer, mulch, gloves, vests and a great city trash can on our corner too. We also thank the city Transportation and Environmental crews for picking up all our trash bags on corners full of debris when we clean up! Great job! Making Old Town presentable and inviting to everyone that lives here — not just the tourists has been a privilege. It is our community — one neighbor — one person on a block can get out clean their front and a neighbor make a difference! It has been so nice seeing neighbors outside - seeing people walk by with their cute dogs or little children - they smile and say thank you. I encourage everyone, homeowners, renters, get outside, beautify your block, get to know your neighbors. Let's all work together to make Old Town as beautiful as she can be!
