Merchants fume that the free trolley service whisks customers away.

EVERY 15 MINUTES a trolley loaded with potential customers glides by Nickell's & Scheffler, a lunchtime favorite on Upper King Street. But those who take the free trolley service from the Metro station to the waterfront may never get a chance to taste the shrimp etouffee that was on the menu one recent Friday. That infuriates chef Louis Nickell, who said the city should find a way to actively encourage people to get off the trolley instead of taking the free ride all the way to Union Street.Read More ....

Limiting Alcohol Sales in Arlandria
City officials move forward with a plan to ask Arlandria retailers to voluntary limit alcohol sales.

SEVERAL MONTHS from now, Arlandria shoppers might not be able to get a six pack of beer after 11 p.m. Even though Virginia law allows most retailers to sell beer and wine until midnight, city officials have been working on a plan to ask Arlandria business owners to voluntarily limit sales as a deterrent to crime. The success of the endeavor now rests with on two 7-Eleven franchise owners in Arlandria, the only retailers who have yet to agree to a proposal supported by the Alexandria Police Department. Folkerts Elected Chairwoman
School Board selects new leadership.

DURING ONE recent School Board meeting, the interim personnel director made a recommendation to the interim superintendent that the school system should hire an interim principal at T.C. Williams High School. It was a revealing moment about the drastic changes that are taking place in the school system, culminating this week in the departure of former Chairwoman Claire Eberwein who officially stepped down from her position as an elected official on Monday. When School Board members convened Tuesday morning for their annual organization meeting, they selected Yvonne Folkerts as their new chairwoman, and Sheryl Gorsuch was selected as vice chairwoman.Read More ....
